Barbed Wire

All the armies fighting in the Great War made massive use of barbed wire. The long trench that for four years split the entire continent of Europe in two was reinforced by barriers comprising barbed wire entanglements known as “chevaux de Frise”, which helped to turn the conflict into a deadly fight for position.

The only way to beat the barbed wire entanglements was to create openings in them under enemy fire using pliers and shears or explosives set by hand. Only in the last phase of the conflict did the use of tanks signal the end of the trench and barbed wire.
